  • Research summary

Foot bone infection is common, difficult to treat and may lead to amputation.
In our recent study we compared an older and newer treatment for foot bone infection.
    • Conventional treatment was 6 weeks of high dose intravenous antibiotics given through a home intravenous line.
    • Treatment 2 was antibiotic paste injected directly into the affected bone with 1 week of oral antibiotics.
We found over a 6 month period that treatment 2 was at least as effective, but had less treatment limiting side-effects such as diarrhoea, had better adherence to treatment and was more convenient for patients and hospitals.
We now wish to follow 25 patients treated with antibiotic paste for 1 year to look at how effective it is at preventing recurrent bone infection, both clinically and on x-ray.
