The Central England Haemato-oncology and oncology Research Biobank (CEHRB) stores excess material from oncology samples referred for diagnostic testing and disease monitoring at the West Midlands Regional Genetics Laboratory (WMRGL). The biobank is housed within the WMRGL. Excess samples (mainly from blood, bone marrow and solid tumours) is stored from diagnostic patient material and from samples received throughout their disease course. The WMRGL serves a population of about 6 million and is the largest UK NHS genetic Lab. Due to the large patient population CEHRB is able to collate sufficient research material from all classifications of neoplastic
haematological disorders (leukaemia and lymphoma) including those that are rare. The biobank can prospectively collate solid tumours samples by request. Patient consent is requested at a number of hospitals within the Midlands. Patients are supplied with an information leaflet explaining the type of research and who may use the samples. The biobank holds data including patient demographics (age, sex, geographical location)and some clinical information related to the patients cancer. The patients can opt to allow the biobank to access their medical notes for any clinical information or data that is relevent to the research that is not routinely held by the biobank.

  • Research programme

Material stored in the biobank is available to all cancer research groups both locally, nationally and internationally. The biobank has so far supported more than 70 research projects from at least 30 research groups from Dundee to Southampton; and internationally. CEHRB also supports WMRGL internal research, with a strong research programme involving genetic and genomic analysis on a range of haematological neoplasias and solid tumours. The WMRGL is involved in a number of research collaborations involving charities, academia, public health organisations and industry. Key projects are the CRUK Stratified Medicine Programme; and TSB Stratified Medicine Innovation Platform grants led by industrial partners Affymetrix and Oxford Gene Technology.
