Research summary
Many patients with arthritis continue to experience significant pain even after receiving optimal arthritis specific therapies. We believe this discrepancy relates to the co-existence of more than one cause of pain. In particular we think that pain originating in the central nervous system (CNS) is likely to be common and responsive to very different types of therapy. First, we seek to derive biological and clinical evidence that this distinct type of pain is important in psoriatic arthritis (PsA) by undertaking a) routine clinical assessments b) questionnaires c) MRI brain scans d) tests of pain sensitivity . Thereafter we will use this information to develop tools which will measure this pain type across chronic musculosketal diseases.
