  • Research summary

The purpose of this study is to understand the patient experiences of Colon Capsule Endoscopy(CCE) in order to better understand the risks and benefits of introducing CCE into a future diagnostic colorectal service and to identify possible strategies to optimise those benefits and mitigate the risks of CCE.
In June 2020 NHSE published clinical guidance supporting the use of CCE in patients who have had a ‘two week wait’ referral for suspected bowel cancer with a faecal immunochemical test(FIT) result of 10-100µg Hb/g faeces. Whilst CCE is a recognised diagnostic tool there is little experience of its use in England and its role within any future colorectal diagnostic clinical service is not yet defined. A study to test and develop the evidence base for the use of this technology is being undertaken currently (IRAS ID:156515).
A central element of the development of any new diagnostic technology is an understanding of the way it is perceived by the patient. Ultimately, independent of its diagnostic accuracy, its acceptability to patients is integral to its clinical utility. Currently, it isn’t known how CCE is perceived by people and whether it is seen as an acceptable test.
Patients who consented into study IRAS ID:156515 and consented to being contacted about future research opportunities will be approached for this study. To identify those experiences that might be considered generic during the diagnostic process from those that are CCE specific, a parallel comparator questionnaire survey will be undertaken in those having CTC or colonoscopy as their first line investigation. These patients will be contacted using their preferred method of contact to complete a questionnaire about their experience. Some patients will be asked to take part in focus groups and interviews. We will also conduct focus groups with care professionals who are delivering the CCE service.
