  • Research summary

This study, titled CBD-BONES, aims to explore whether cannabidiol (CBD) supplements have an effect on how well bones heal after a fracture. CBD is a non-psychoactive compound found in cannabis, and is widely used as a health supplement. Some murine studies suggest that it might support bone healing, but there is little research in humans.

In this observational study, 100 adult patients who have recently experienced a fracture will be recruited at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. Participants will be split into two groups — those who already use CBD and those who do not.

Over six weeks, all participants will be asked to provide blood and urine samples every two weeks and complete short weekly questionnaires about pain and mobility. The study will compare bone healing markers and self-reported recovery between the two groups.

The study is not testing or giving out CBD. It only observes patients who already use it. All participation is voluntary, and no personal results will be shared with participants or their clinical team. Findings will help inform future research into CBD’s effects on bone health.
