  • Research summary

Cataracts were very common int he ageing population and the most common cause of blindness in the world. The pattern electroretinogram (PERG) was an established technique used to give an objective measure of central visual function. Cataracts reduced the size of the PERG responses recorded, however these responses also became smaller as we aged. Therefore the purpose of this study was to evaluate if there was a correlation between the size of the PERG response and how ’ripe’ the cataract was in order to improve interpretation of PERG results in the elderly population.
