The Case Mix Programme (CMP) is the national clinical audit of patient outcomes from adult critical care. The CMP has 100% coverage of adult general critical care units in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and also includes other specialist units, including neurosciences, cardiac and high dependency units.

Data are collected on consecutive admissions to participating critical care units, covering admission to critical care, past medical history, reason for admission to critical care, physiology during first 24 hours of critical care, activity in critical care, and outcome (unit and hospital). Confidential/sensitive patient information is required to provide a national resource for practising, managing and commissioning critical care in the UK, to conduct an audit of patient outcome from general critical care units and to support improvements of standards in critical care.

This application seeks approval of the CMP national clinical audit as a Research Database, under which, research can be conducted by ICNARC or through the sharing of de-identified data with approved researchers/organisations. As the national clinical audit for adult critical care in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, data collection is ongoing.
