Research summary
The study aims to explore the role of the dentist in delivering person-centred co-ordinated care to older people in care homes.
The study objectives are:
1. To examine the experiences and views of key stakeholders regarding dentists’ role in person-centred coordinated care for older people living in care homes.
2. To define the individual and organisational factors which facilitate and inhibit the effective implementation of person-centred co-ordinated care in dentistry for older people living in care homes.
3. To define a set of principles for the implementation of person-centred co-ordinated care in dentistry for older people living in care homes.The research design for this study will involve qualitative research methods using 1 to 1 semi-structured interviews with primary care dentists, care home workers and family members of older people living in care homes. The interviews will be used to build an understanding of, and identify the reported difficulties in providing dentistry for older people living in care homes. The interviews will involve primary care dentists, care home workers and family members of older people living in care homes. A purposive sample of participants will be taken seeking to gain in-depth and breadth of views from different primary care dentists who might be expected to hold differing attitudes and opinions.

Data collection: Beginning May 2015
Data analysis complete: End November 2016Benefits: Within 18 months from the start of this study, the PI will present the findings at academic conferences/ stakeholder events and submit one peer reviewed publication using the in-depth qualitative data obtained from the research. In this way the data will be available for consideration and use by patients and families, providers, commissioners and policy makers.
