  • Research summary

Family members and friends (‘carers’) are critically important in the home care of people with dementia. The Admiral Nurse service, run by the charity Dementia UK, works with individuals affected by this condition, including carers. This study aims to explore people’s experiences of caring for someone with dementia and their views of support that they may need. This will include discussing how confident they are about caring for someone with dementia, their ability to manage, and their views of accessing services. For the research, we will carry out interviews with about 20-24 carers of people with dementia. These interviews will be audio-recorded and written up word for word. Data from interviews will be analysed by looking for patterns and themes, including similarities and differences between what people have said. It is anticipated that findings from the study will help to identify additional ways to support carers, which can then be implemented into services, such as the work undertaken by Admiral Nurses.
