Research summary
The role and scope of practice of optometrists in managing the glaucoma burden varies significantly throughout the UK. The overall aim of this study is to investigate, qualitatively, the perceptions of all relevant stakeholders on the scope of optometry roles in glaucoma (including in laser services), in order to better establish what support there is for the following: Whether optometrists maintain or improve the quality of care for patients; whether with further training and accreditation, optometrists can provide a standardised high-quality glaucoma service that benefits the overall eye care pathway within these newer extended roles including laser treatments; whether optometric glaucoma care is accepted as an effective alternative to traditional models of care by patients, providers and other stakeholders; and what contextual factors impact upon the development, outcome and sustainability of glaucoma care by optometrists.
