Research summary
Increasing numbers of family members are being relied upon to provide support for a person with dementia at home. Service providers often take for granted that family members are willing and prepared to provide care, particularly with south Asian families who are thought to ‘look after their own’. The aim of this research will be to explore how the following key factors impact upon carers’ well-being: sense of obligation to care, willingness to provide care, how prepared they feel for providing care, and how confident they feel in the care role. Family carers of people with dementia will be followed up over twelve months using questionnaires and in-depth interviews to look at the key factors. This ‘follow up’ approach will enable us to understand how these key factors change over time and find out if they predict whether carers have positive or negative experiences. The research will lead to the production of a booklet ‘tips for carers’ that will help other carers to feel more prepared for the different points in the care role. In addition the research will inform the development of interventions for carers with a focus on preparation for the different aspects of the carer journey and an understanding of cultural values will enable service providers to tailor services to diverse groups of carers.
