  • Research summary

This study is work package 3 (WP3) part of a wider programme called CARECOACH. We have taken a promising Dutch intervention called 'Partner in Balance' for carers of people with dementia and adapted this for UK settings to create the CareCoach intervention. This is a blended care package including online health resource modules and one-to-one coaching. This study will test the practicalities and processes for running a small trial of the CareCoach intervention. We aim to recruit 42 carers from 7 sites across England and Wales. We plan to use different recruitment methods including direct referral from NHS memory clinics, advertising in local community groups and memory cafes, and advertising campaigns using national charitable organisations e.g. Dementia UK, Alzheimer’s Society, and through social media. This will help to optimise the recruitment strategy for a larger future trial. Participants consenting to take part in the study will be randomly assigned to the CareCoach intervention or continue usual care. Those in the intervention will have access to the CareCoach online resources and a coach for 8 weeks who will encourage the participant to work through several of the CareCoach modules. We will examine how well questionnaire measures are collected at baseline and at 6 months follow up timepoints. We will also assess training and delivery of the intervention. We will invite a small number of participants to be interviewed. This is to gather feedback on the participants experience of taking part in this study in order to improve this for future participants in the larger future trial.
