Research summary
This initial qualitative study uses an accelerated version of Experience-Based Co-Design (EBCD), where existing materials from the dutch Partner in Balance (PiB) website provide the material to stimulate discussions for both staff and carers in the co-design workshops. Building on the partnerships with Join Dementia Research, TIDE, Dementia UK and Alzheimer’s Society 20 carers of people with dementia diagnosed in the previous 12 months and 20 dementia-experienced staff (Admiral nurses/ multidisciplinary Community Mental Health Team staff) will be recruited to ensure maximum variation in age, sex, relationship to person with dementia and length of time since first working with people with dementia. In recorded online video interviews, carers will be given access to the PiB videos and module resources. They will be asked to discuss their experiences as carers (prompted by what they see) and then explore what they think is important to modify and ways to implement it through current care pathways. They will also be asked to discuss accessibility of resources, IT options and design features. Staff interviews will also be recorded. They will watch selected PiB resources and be asked to recollect their own experiences a) explain those that resonate with them and b) identify features they see as important to modify to fit the UK context for PIBUK. They will also be asked to consider how it could be implemented in current care pathways and their own work environments. Relevant and emotionally resonant footage from the interviews will be edited into a short film to be used to facilitate discussion during the joint staff and carer co-design workshops. These findings will be analysed to highlight themes and feed into adapting PiBUK from the PIB intervention to be tested in later work packages of the CareCoach programme.
