  • Research summary

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a major global public health problem affecting over 1 million people in the UK each year. Current guidelines are heavily focused on assessment and acute management, while rehabilitation guidelines are scarce and non-specific.
This research aims to identify the recovery journeys of people with Traumatic Brain Injury, and understand the clinical decision-making processes underpinning their care.

Within the overall aim, it has been determined that this project will be conducted in three phases. Phase I of the study will be conducted within the remit of a PhD project. It will involve two qualitative studies: one will involve interviews of Health Care Professionals (HCPs), the other, interviews of patients with TBI.

The HCP interviews (study 1) will be conducted using a schedule of topics pertaining to pathways, processes of care, decision-making and associated challenges, and suggestions for improvement that they would like to see moving forward. The interviews will be transcribed and analysed using Role Activity Diagrams. The results of the interviews will help to inform elements of a care pathway that will be needed for decision-making processes and the dispensing of appropriate patient care post-discharge from acute services.

Study 2 will involve interviewing a sample of patients who have capacity to consent. The interviews will be transcribed and analysed using thematic analysis and will elicit information about individual care journeys, and patient perspectives on TBI services, particularly in the context of medium to long-term rehabilitation.

This application will provide more detail about studies 1 and 2 (Phase I). The results from these studies will provide information about what data should be collected and how it should be collected to inform our understanding of care pathways for patients with TBI. These results will be fed into the development of a pilot study (phase II) and a larger scale cohort study (phase III). Protocols for phases II and III, which are dependent on phase I results, will be submitted as amendments to this application.
