Research summary
The overall objective of the study is to explore the consequences of decisions made in the hospital, determine how this relates to the care stroke survivors actually experience in the community and to investigate patient recovery. The study will be led by Dr Rebecca Fisher, Senior Research Fellow & Portfolio Development Manager at the University of Nottingham and Sushmita Mohapatra, an Occupational therapist and PhD researcher who will be using the study results for her doctoral thesis.
The first phase of the study will explore how decisions are made in the hospital that determines the rehabilitation services the stroke survivors with severe disabilities would receive after discharge from hospital. This information will be gathered by interviewing the hospital staff caring for stroke survivors.
In the second phase, services received in the community will be investigated by following up the stroke survivors in the community for six months after stroke. Baseline data will be collected in the hospital (approximately seven days after stroke) and the level of recovery will be measured twice in the community using validated questionnires. The researcher will collect the follow-up data within one week of discharge from hospital and at six months after stroke at the place of residence for the stroke survivor.
We will also interview the stroke survivors and their carers about their experience of the care provision in the community. Findings from the research will contribute to and inform the design of a care pathway for stroke survivors with severe disability.
Both staff and patient participants will be recruited from the acute stroke unit at Nottingham University Hospital NHS Trust. To be eligible, the patient participants must be over 18 years old, admitted to the stroke unit with severe disabilities after stroke and living within 25 miles radius of NUH.
The study will use both qualitative and quantitative approach to analyse the findings.REC name
