Research summary
The incidence of heart attack and stroke remains particularly high in individuals of South Asian (Indian Sub-Continent) ethnicity for reasons that are not entirely clear. This study will focus on investigating young South Asians aged below 40 years and should facilitate a better understanding of the pattern and magnitude of the risk factors resulting in heart problems and stroke at an early age.
We plan screen all the participants for diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and conduct an electrocardiogram (ECG) as part of the study. The 12-lead electrocardiogram (Heart tracing) will help us to detect inherited heart diseases (problems with the muscles and conduction system of the heart like Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy and Brugada Syndrome) in this population. These conditions are the commonest cause of sudden cardiac death (SCD) in the younger individuals. There has been very limited study previously looking at these risk factors in young South Asians. We will refer the ones with abnormal results for further follow up at their local hospital after they have consented. This study will further help us understand whether primary prevention and screening can help in bringing down the incidence of heart attack, stroke and sudden cardiac death in the future in this ethnicity.
