Research summary
The aims of the research will be (i) to investigate the patterns of emerging cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes risk among children and adolescents (including emerging geographic and ethnic differences in risk) and (ii) to define the determinants of these risks, including examining the role of environmental, dietary and genetic factors. This research will be based on two earlier cross-sectional studies of children and adolescents living in ten towns in England and Wales. These were carried out in 1994 in 3415 children aged 8-11 years (of whom 1405 children provided blood samples) and in 1998-1999 in 2623 children aged 12-16 years (of whom 1532 children provided blood samples). In both studies the children completed questionnaires, had physical measurements and provided blood samples. Because some of the children were measured at both time points, together these studies constitute a mixed longitudinal study. Several reports on the cardiovascular and type 2 diabetes risk profiles of these children have already been published. A particular focus of the new research will include the use of the blood sample resource to measure recently defined markers of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes risk. These particularly include the measurement of individual saturated fatty acids implicated in the development of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes and the measurement of novel cardiovascular risk factors, including markers of inflammation, haemostasis and endothelial function.
