  • Research summary

Patients with severe mental health conditions, are associated with an increased prevalence of co-morbid physical health conditions especially cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Although the causes of CVDs in people with mental health conditions are multifactorial, research evidence suggests that antipsychotics have the potential to cause cardiovascular diseases or worsening pre-existing conditions. Recently, the management of cardiovascular and metabolic side effects in patients taking antipsychotics has received considerable attention.
However, undiagnosed and untreated cardiovascular and metabolic diseases among patients prescribed antipsychotics remain high due to suboptimal screening, which leads to missed opportunities for the use of primary preventive measures and hence high in-disposition and death rates.
This study aims to determine the rate of screening and monitoring of patients prescribed antipsychotics and the influences on the uptake of the recommending guidelines in practice.
A mixed-method of quantitative and qualitative research will be used for the present study including the review of routinely collected data and interviews with patients and healthcare providers. The outcomes of this research may enable better understanding and highlight how is the current practice, what is required for optimal service and to allow for more inter-professional working.
