  • Research summary

Prior to major surgery, national guidelines recommend patients participate in several tests to assess their fitness levels. This information is useful as it can give medical staff the information needed to make important decisions about survival after surgery. These tests allow both patients and medical staff to make a more informed decision about risk of surgery. In patients who may require thoracic surgery, certain exercise tests has been shown to give information about what complications the medical team might expect (if any) and how to plan the recovery process. As surgical technique advance there is an underlying question if these tests are still useful to do. Research in this area can lead to improvements in routine care. This research is being carried out to discover if the current recommendations by national guidelines are still valid in a specific patient population. Patients who volunteer to take part in this research will be asked to perform an additional walking test. The study will use patients exercise test results along with their discharge summaries to try and predict complications that might occur after thoracic surgery. A potential benefit as a result of this research is improvements in current standards of care. In the future patients may not need to do as many tests before having surgery saving time and NHS money. All patients that attend the Manchester University Hospital Rapid Hub clinic will have the opportunity to participate in the research, if they wish to do so. The research is not funded by any outside organisation and medical staff will not receive any payment for asking patients to take part in the study.

    Definition:
For the purpose of this study thoracic surgery as been defined as any surgery in the chest area.
