Research summary
Infertility is a global health concern which affects one in six couples in developed countries. In-vitro Fertilisation (IVF) is now widely established as an effective treatment for infertility. Maternal age and ovarian reserve are the most widely recognised maternal factors that can influence the overall success rates. However, it is increasingly recognised that maternal and paternal cardiometabolic health may also influence treatment outcomes. This study will develop a prospective infertility cohort with detailed cardiometabolic phenotyping to identify the nature and strength of these associations with IVF outcomes.
800 infertile couples undergoing fertility treatment in the Assisted Conception Service at Glasgow Royal Infirmary will be required to participate in the study. All research visits will be aligned with routine clinical care visits and be conducted prior to the commencement of ovarian stimulation. 10mls of blood will be taken for DNA and serum metabolomics assessment. A high vaginal swab will be taken and DNA extracted for future bacterial taxonomic assessment. Routine ovarian stimulation, embryology and pregnancy outcome data will be collected. This research may identify potential ways to improve outcome prediction and success rates in assisted conception treatment.
