  • Research summary

The aim of the study is to develop and evaluate a short and clinically relevant measure of changes in cognition and daily functioning in people with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) or Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Currently, neuropsychological testing requires great effort over a relatively long period of time, which can be burdensome for patients. Tests that are currently available cannot reliably measure cognitive and daily functioning changes over time. It is important that clinicians and researchers are able to measure disease progression and evaluate treatment effects. The new measure will be called the Cognitive-Functional Composite (CFC).

CatCh-Cog will begin with a pilot study to trial the first version of the CFC with 60 patients and 60 caregivers, and 30 healthy controls and 30 caregivers (total 180 participants), to assess feasibility and test re-test reliability. Patients will be defined as those with a diagnosis of MCI or AD. Patients will also be required to bring a caregiver or study partner to each visit. The pilot study will be followed by a longitudinal validation study (main study) where 300 patients and 300 caregivers will be recruited and followed up over 12-months. The study will be carried out in 4 research sites: 3 in the Netherlands and 1 in the UK (Edinburgh).
