  • Research summary

Patients will be recruited from a variety of clinics at the Mid & South Essex NHS Trust Hospitals including Broomfield Hospital, Basildon Hospital and Southend Hospital. These patients are either being treated or are being monitored for a number of conditions. Patients that agree to participate in the study will be fully informed and consented. In addition to the routine venous blood samples collected for clinical care, the individual will be requested to provide one additional venous blood sample and up to three capillary blood samples, unless the patient agrees and is able to provide more, for further evaluation. Samples will be collected into serum separator tubes and then centrifuged as soon as possible after collection. Electrolytes, hormones, enzymes, proteins and intermidairy metabolites will be tested using standard methods and assays on the Roche, Siemens, Abbott and Beckman analysers which will have been calibrated with the accepted international standards. Method comparison will be undertaken by measuring the respective analytes on paired sets of venous and capillary samples taken from the patient at the same collection time point. In addition, on the capillary samples, we will assess sample stability over time, assay linearity, accuracy, precision, limit of detection (LoD), limit of quantitation (LoQ), potential for interferences and biological variation.
