Research summary
In 2010, the Welsh Government (WG) published the “National Standards for Rehabilitation of Adult Cancer Patients” stating that all cancer patients should have access to specialist rehabilitation throughout their cancer journey. In June 2012, the WG strategy, Together for Health – Cancer Delivery Plan for the NHS in Wales was published, which supported the rehabilitation standards in driving forward the delivery of fast, effective and patient centred services. In addition, in 2013 the National Cancer Action Team reinforced the key role that physiotherapists have in delivering essential cancer rehabilitation for patients throughout their cancer Journey, by optimising components throughout the 8 domains of cancer care.
Unfortunately, implementation of cancer rehabilitation has been inconsistent across the South Wales Cancer Network. This is due to a lack of clear understanding of the role of cancer rehabilitation amongst physiotherapists working within oncology and palliative care. However, there is also deficiency in cancer patient’s perceptions of the cancer rehabilitation role and the potential benefits this role could bring to their cancer survivorship. The project aims to discover what physiotherapists working within oncology and palliative care think of the cancer rehabilitation concept. It aims to develop greater knowledge of the barriers to the implementation and highlight any differences between the two settings all to improve execution. It will also discover perceptions and attitudes from different cancer patients on their views on the role of cancer rehabilitation and the prospective benefits. This information will then provide us with more detail to further drive forward cancer rehabilitation.
