Research summary
Many people with cancer experience a wide range of symptoms and problems across all areas of life. Studies suggest that these symptoms are common but are often not known about or managed by the doctors and nurses caring for them.
The Needs Assessment Tool-Cancer (NAT-C) has been developed for use by doctors or other clinicians in GP Surgeries to identify and address any concerning symptoms and unmet needs of their cancer patients. We will test whether regular use of this tool improves patient care.
We aim to include 54 GP Surgeries across Yorkshire and Sunderland. Half of these surgeries will use the NAT-C tool (intervention arm), and the other half will continue care as usual (control arm).
We will approach eligible patients on the cancer registry who are aged 18 and over and received their diagnosis more than 1 month ago. We will ask if they are willing to take part, and if so, obtain consent and complete assessments in the patient's home. If their GP surgery is in the NAT-C arm, the participant will attend an appointment or home visit with their Surgery GP or nurse. All participants will be asked to complete study questionnaires at 1 month and 3 months, and most will also be asked to complete study questionnaires at 6 months (depending on time of enrolment).
We will also look at the process of using the NAT-C in daily clinical care to see how it could be used as part of routine care if the trial showed that patients benefited. We will therefore ask the clinicians in NAT-C surgeries about their views and experience of using the NAT-C.
