Research summary
Simulation Based Education (SBE) is intended to be driven by the needs of the clinical team to deliver safe, effective patient care, generally with a focus on Non-technical skills and human factors. This research project aims to identify to what extent stakeholders value SBE as an educational tool as opposed to other more economical and traditional methods of education. We intend to explore which areas of knowledge, skills and attitudes, patients, carers, and patient advice and liaison services (PALS) feel SBE should focus on and how this compares the perceptions of senior clinicians.
Furthermore, to describe how this aligns with learning objectives defined in currently delivered (undergraduate and postgraduate) simulation courses.Method
A single centre qualitative thematic analysis involving stakeholders in Simulation Based Education (SBE), with an emphasis on patient experience. Information will be gathered through individual, semi-structured interviews either face-to-face or over technology such as Microsoft Teams, depending on participant preference.
3 different groups will be approached to take part in the interviews:1. Patients or relatives who have contacted PALS with issues. We hope that these patients will have insight which may help us understand how we can improve care and patient experience, given their previous experiences.
2. Staff supporting the PALS
3. Senior hospital clinicians
Once selected and consented the participants will watch a video explaining what simulation training is and how it can be implemented before the interview takes place.
The data collected will analysed to identify areas where there are themes identified in the interview process. The number of participants will be determined by the point at which there is a saturation of ideas from the interviews. The information gathered will be used to help guide learning objectives for simulation at a local level with the results being published potentially having an impact nationally.
