Research summary
It is recommended within National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the NHS Strategy that shared decision making be employed where cancer treatment or supportive care options are available to a patient. Shared decision making is associated with positive outcomes for patients including reduced decision regret surrounding their treatment and reduction of unrealistic expectations.\nThis pilot study aims to evaluate a web-based decision making support package to underpin goals of care conversations for patients with incurable cancer. Can-GUIDE contains information material in the form of videos demonstrating a range of patient scenarios and decision making processes, relevant cancer information materials, and a set of questionnaires that can be completed by the patient prior to the oncology consultation; this can be shared with the clinicians, if the patient wishes. The aim of Can-GUIDE is to support and empower patients in shared-decision making in the context of cancer treatment with non-curative intent and to facilitate goals of care discussions between patients and clinicians. \nThe decision making process using Can-GUIDE will be assessed using appropriate, validated measures. Clinician opinion will be sought to determine whether patient responses to the package helped guide goals of care conversations within their consultations. Furthermore, General Practitioners (GPs) will be surveyed to determine the usefulness of receiving a tool documenting goals of care conversations within consultations. Feedback regarding the usability and acceptability of the package from all participant groups will also be gathered to further inform future design and content changes.\nPatients and clinicians will be recruited from a range of oncology teams at participating sites over a six month period. The recruited patients nominated GP will be approached to take part in the study if the patient gives permission.
