  • Research summary

The study is designed to look at the expression of PMCA 4 molecules in normal and diseased human abdominal aorta. Our previous two studies confirmed that PMCA 1 and 4 are expressed in human peripheral arterial samples from patients with peripheral vascular disease. The expression of PMCA 4 was significantly decreased in occluded arteries of the lower leg. The expression of PMCA 4 in human aorta has not been studied before. The researchers hypothesise that its expression may have a similar pattern in diseased aorta to one found in peripheral vascular disease and a similar pattern in aneurysmal diseased states.
The research aims to test this hypothesis by conducting a new study in which human aortic samples are to be analysed for PMCA 1 and 4 expression and a difference observed, if present, between diseased abdominal aortic tissue and healthy thoracic aortic samples.

(It is necessary to study thoracic aortic tissue as there is no safe or ethical way available to study normal abdominal aorta)
