Research summary
The current balance, gait and stability assessments performed within clinical settings do not provide meaningful objective measurements whilst the objective measurements require expensive an large dedicated laboratory settings limiting their use and availability for routine widespread clinical use.
Clinicians therefore typically rate or score a patients' balance subjectively, based on clinical experience. This project will be used to co-design and develop a low-cost, portable, reliable, unobtrusive, non invasive, quick, easy to use and analyse, system to provide objective measurements of static and dynamic balance by clinicians and therapists in day to day clinical settings. An analysis system may comprise of a colour network camera and may measure gait, posture and stability. This will enhance current patient assessment by providing an objective measure of dynamic balance alongside traditional tests and assessments with no additional effort or time required for the patient.
