  • Data collection arrangements

The goal of this Transplant Tissue Bank is to collect and store samples from patients undergoing kidney, liver, pancreas or multivisceral transplant . We will collect samples over several (13 maximum) time points over the course of up to 10 years post-transplant, allowing longitudinal sampling of patients.

Consented patients may be asked to donate one or more of the following:

    • A blood sample
    • A urine sample
    • Tissue from the transplanted or original organ
    • Stored tissue (e.g, prior biopsy or surgical procedure)

Transplant Tissue Bank team members seeking consent are appropriately trained, and will answer questions prio- and post- consent. Patients are free to withdraw consent at any time without giving a reason. Where possible, samples will be taken at the same time as samples required as part of routine clinical care.

  • Research programme

Medical research requires samples from patients. These samples may be fluids (e.g. urine or blood). They may also be tissues from biopsy or surgery specimens. The purpose of a Tissue Bank is to collect samples in sufficient numbers, so that they are ready when they are needed to answer a specific research question. Our Transplant Tissue Bank will supply scientists who are undertaking research about transplantation. Examining tissue from patients can give information which can help develop new tests and better treatments. Tissue Banks such as ours aim to collect and store tissue for researchers to use now and in the future. We want to develop new methods to improve how well we diagnose and treat patients who have a transplant. We also want to understand factors that help us to predict the future outcome of patients. We hope that by better understanding the process of the disease, we will be able to help improve treatments. To do this research, we need samples from transplant recipients, together with information about how their disease changes with time.
