Research summary
Colorectal cancer is the second most common cause of cancer related mortality in the United Kingdom. It has been suggested that one of the reasons that drugs and radiotherapy often fail to have effect in colorectal cancer is related to the presence of a small population of aggressive, drug resistant cells called 'Cancer Stem Cells'. Using our prior knowledge in stem cell biology of the normal intestine we seek to understand the behaviour of colorectal cancer stem cells and the mechanisms underlying their unique abilities.
