Research summary
Calcinosis is an extremely painful and debilitating feature of connective tissue disease, but very little research exists and so the treatment options remain limited.
The aim of the study is to understand the important features in determining who develops calcinosis and the impact this has, to provide a focus for appropriate treatments.
We will undertake a study in two phases. The first phase will involve regional questionnaires to patients with connective tissue disease to determine the prevalence and impact of calcinosis. In the second phase, we will undertake detailed clinical assessments to understand why calcinosis develops in order to develop better treatments. Phase two will look at comparing people with and without calcinosis and we will also compare different areas of the body in the same patients with calcinosis.REC name
