Research summary
It is proposed that a number of strategies aimed at preconditioning patients might better prepare the patient for the stresses of major surgery. These benefits might be associated with improved patient outcome measures such as quicker restoration of gut function and reduced fatigue. Taken together these factors might also be beneficial to the patient in reducing lengths of hospital stay.
The objectives of this study are to evaluate the ability of pre-operative nutritional supplements to improve recovery and reduce fatigue after surgery. The primary endpoint is return of gut function. The secondary endpoint is fatigue as measured by weight loss during inpatient stay. This will be a three armed RCT in Hull aiming to recruit 25 patients to each arm. Both the participants and clinical team looking after the patient will be blinded to the randomisation.REC name
