Research summary
Psoriasis, eczema (also known as atopic dermatitis) and acne are common skin conditions in young adults that are uncomfortable and upsetting to live with. They affect appearance, confidence and relationships. People with these conditions are more anxious and depressed than people with other long-term conditions like asthma and diabetes and can be more likely to harm themselves or have suicidal thoughts. This can lead them to cope in ways that worsen their skin and put them at risk of other conditions like diabetes or heart problems, for example through smoking or drinking too much alcohol. There is no specific help for younger people with skin
conditions to look after themselves.Through in-depth interviews with up to 30 young people aged 16-23 years attending specialist skin clinics at Salford Royal Foundation Trust, this study (Phase I of BRISC), will explore experiences of young adults living with a severe skin condition and identify the support they need from skin services. Interviews will be analysed thematically and findings will be used to develop a programme to build self-confidence and resilience in young people with skin conditions and support them to look after themselves.
(The programme will be tested and evaluated in a separate group of young people in Phases 2 and 3 of BRISC - for which a discrete ethics application will be made at the end of Phase I - See Appendix A the BRISC Protocol for details of Phases 1, 2 and 3).
This research may help young people to better cope with their skin condition, lowering the risk of emotional and relationship problems, preventing other health conditions and reducing costs to the NHS.
