Research summary
Globally, more than 40% of persons have a functional gastrointestinal disorder. However, there is still a lack of tools for the diagnosis of these functional disorders. Additional clinical tests are needed to; determine the source of the pathology, subtype and categorise patients, and guide therapy. The development of a high resolution mapping technique for the stomachs electrical activity has provided new biomarkers for the diagnosis of gastrointestinal disorders. This method overcomes the lack of spatial resolution in prior techniques. Until recently, this method of was invasive as it relied on minimally invasive laparoscopic devices or an inflatable endoscopic (mucosal) mapping strategy. Alimetry offers a non-invasive cutaneous high resolution Body Surface Gastric Mapping technique.
