  • Research summary

The ability to communicate can be impaired after a brain injury such as a stroke or a traumatic brain injury. Communication impairments have a significant impact on people's lives, reducing their participation in day-to-day events, cutting them off from friends and family and leading to a high incidence of mental health problems. Understanding how to help people with communication impairments is ranked as one of the highest priorities for stroke research by stroke survivors (James Lind Alliance Research).

Although there is considerable interest in undertaking research into acquired communication impairments, research progress can be hampered by difficulties in recruiting participants and in collecting data. This leads to small samples sizes and problems in generalising conclusions to the wider population. One method of addressing the problem of small sample size is to collect a large body of research data over time and to share this data nationally and internationally with other researchers, allowing them to undertake their own research studies in their area of expertise.

This study will collect neuropsychology (e.g. language tests) and neuroimaging (e.g. MRI brain scans) data from a large population of individuals with acquired communication impairments. Anonymised data will be shared with other researchers. This will enable them to undertake research studies into the causes and recovery from communication impairments after brain injury.
