Data collection arrangements
BRIGID is a system comprising different elements of infrastructure for storing medical images and data concerning breast conditions including cancer. The images include X-ray mammograms, ultrasound scans and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. The data include measurements and interpretations of these images, plus pathology information and for some patients, breast cancer risk information. Images and data entered into BRIGID are collected via a number of mechanisms. Mammograms can be collected through automated systems, while pathology data, for example, will be transcribed from reports stored in existing clinical systems.
Research programme
The research community supported by the database is mostly the same one collecting the data, namely the breast care team at NHS Tayside and the University of Dundee Medical School. However, over time, we hope and expect that the wider breast cancer research community may be able to utilise the database for the benefit of future breast cancer patients. This may include overseas researchers. In addition, we have international co-investigators on some of our research projects already. Currently, the programmes supported by the database include investigations into the effectiveness of new breast imaging modalities such as contrast-enhanced mammography. The database also supports studies aiming to optimise patient experience and image quality in mammography. A large, pre-existing dataset imported into BRIGID is valuable for enabling studies into the behaviour of breast cancer and how it might be predicted.
