Research summary
Chlamydia (CT) and gonorrhoea (GC) are bacterial infections with severe sequelae if left untreated. CT and GC are the most commonly diagnosed sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among men who have sex with men (MSM) and are usually asymptomatic. MSM attending GU clinics for screening will be offered triple site testing (urethra, throat and rectum) if at risk of infection at these sites. This study will investigate the feasibility and acceptability of pooling 2 swabs (pharyngeal and/or rectal) into one tube which contains the urine sample so that only one sample is processed in the lab rather than two or three. This method has been studied in men who have sex with men in London and has the potential to provide huge cost savings to the NHS.
