  • Research summary

Immunological disorders of the central nervous system (CNS) are a diverse group of conditions in which the immune system causes tissue damage to the CNS. Many of these conditions remain poorly understood and can have limited treatment options.

To be able to develop new ways to diagnose these disorders and identify treatments, we need to understand the mechanisms of the tissue damage and if/how repair can happen. We can use samples (such as blood or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)) coupled with clinical data (such as clinical assessments or imaging) to gain this understanding.

In this study, we propose to use samples (and data, where possible) which are collected by one of the following routes:
    • as part of another ethically-approved study, where the participant (including patients and healthy controls) has given consent for their samples/data to be used in other studies
    • during a clinical procedure for diagnosis or treatment, where the patient has given consent to donate surplus tissue for research purposes
    • during post-mortem, where the patient’s representative has given consent to donate surplus tissue for research purposes

No new samples will be collected as part of this study.

The samples will then be stored and analysed, and information from the analysis can be coupled with clinical data where consent has been given to also use this.
