Research summary
Title: Breathing REtraining for Asthma Trial of Home Exercises for Teenagers; repurposing, refining and feasibility.\n\nThe problem we aim to address is impaired quality of life despite appropriate medicines for young people with asthma. Young people tell us that during an asthma attack they have to calm themselves down to control their breathing. Although physiotherapist-delivered breathing retraining programmes now have a clear evidence base in adults with asthma, improving quality of life, there is a lack of evidence assessing its use in younger patients. There is a need to redesign this adult training package to make it appropriate for young people, and then assess how effective such an intervention would be in this population. This study will include young people (12-17 years) with physician diagnosed asthma and their parents.\n\nStage 1: To conduct systematic theory, evidence and person-based planning to establish the initial intervention design. This will complement the input from the core intervention development team and the patient(12-16 adolescents in two focus groups and 12-16 parents in two focus groups) and public involvement panels. \n\nStage 2:To develop the intervention using a person-based approach (15-20 adolescents). A mobile-friendly website will be developed with the information about: benefits of breathing exercises, short and engaging videos demonstrating breathing exercises, supportive elements such as a daily planner and progress chart, advice on how to integrate breathing exercises into daily life, advice addressing common barriers to engagement.\n\nThe intervention will be piloted in Stage 3 (15-20 adolescents)which will be detailed in a separate protocol and REC.\n\nRecruitment would be from primary care and hospital clinics. Asthma UK will provide publicity to assist recruitment. Participants will participate in phases 1 and 2 of the study at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, St Mary’s Hospital Isle of Wight or at Asthma UK in London.
