Research summary
Substantial progress has been made to reduce the burden of breast cancer in the UK, with the rates of breast cancer death in the UK almost being halved since the 1980s. A large part of this has been due early detection from mammography. There is increasing interest in routinely undertaking risk assessment for breast cancer. This might help to guide new and potentially better screening and prevention strategies, particularly for women at a high risk of breast cancer. An important issue holding back this area is that there is no clear consensus on how to assess the risk of breast cancer for women in practice. Evidence is particularly lacking for non-Caucasian women, and more data are needed to better assess the acceptability of breast cancer risk assessment in diverse populations.
The study will assess the acceptability of risk assessment in women from a population in East London (Barts Health NHS Trust). This population is particularly suited to assess acceptability in minority ethnic groups. In two consecutive stages we will invite women to join the study who are attending (1) a family history clinic and (2) a breast cancer screening recall clinic. Women will be asked to provide information on questionnaire risk factors and permit their use of mammograms to estimate breast density. They will be also invited to provide a saliva sample that will be stored for later research purposes. The study researcher will aim to invite 2400 women to these studies over an 18-month period. In addition to acceptability, we will also assess how more comprehensive risk assessment than just family history could affect the number of high-risk women identified in the family history clinic, and the accuracy of current methods for different ethnic groups.REC name
