  • Data collection arrangements

Breast Cancer Now Tissue Bank is a multicentre tissue bank comprising of 5 centres (Barts, Leeds, Nottingham, Sheffield and Southampton). All samples collected are with patients informed consent. Samples collected in Sheffield will be transferred to Leeds for storage until further use for researchers. Similarly samples collected in Southampton will be transferred to Nottingham for storage until further use. Samples will be stored at 3 sites Barts (Charterhouse Square & Barts Hospital),Leeds (Clinical Sciences Bldg, St James's Univ Hospital) and Nottingham (David Evans Medical Research Centre, City Campus & Undercroft Queens Medical Centre) in a secure, purposed built facility which is accessible to only authorised Tissue Bank staff.
All donors will be assigned a unique barcode which will be created locally at each of the 5 sites and then integrated into the main database located and hosted by Breast Cancer Now. This barcode is attached to all samples that are retrieved including associated paperwork. This unique barcode is the only identifier entered onto the electronic database. A copy of donor identifiable information, with relevant barcode, is kept on paper to allow tissues and samples to be linked anonymised.

  • Research programme

A wide range of basic and translational research using techniques like basic DNA, RNA extractions, immunohistochemistry (IHC), Polymerase Chain Reactions (PCR), insitu hybridisation techniques, primary cell culture, as well as new techniques in next generation sequencing, transcriptomics, metabolomics and proteomics. Database research projects will also be supported to understand the complexity of breast cancer disease. These types of research will be undertaken by scientists, clinical and non-clinical academics, undergraduate/postgraduate students. This will include pathological and molecular/biochemical analysis of tissues, blood samples of normal and diseased tissues and may include using animals models e.g. patient derived xenografts. There will be no experimental drug testing or cosmetic testing or any other consumer goods testing. All tissue request applications will be assessed by Tissue Access Committee consisting of clinicians, scientists and patient advocates. Tissues will be released upon successful approval and agreement of Material Transfer Agreement.
