  • Research summary

The need for mechanical ventilation (MV) is one of the most common indications for children to be admitted to the paediatric intensive care unit. However, numerous issues remain unsolved and a lot of current clinical practice is based upon anecdotal experience in combination with data originating from studies in critically ill adults. This lack of child-specific data means it is important to improve the scientific basis informing our delivery of MV for critically ill children. Ideally randomised clinical trials (RCT) are needed to determine the effectiveness of various aspects of MV for critically ill children. However, before such RCTs can be designed, it is necessary to understand current clinical practice in PICUs from an international perspective. This study aims to describe standard care practices which can then be used to inform design for randomization i.e. determine appropriates study control groups.
Additionally it is important to have an understanding of the local context and organisational characteristics of PICUs, which influence usual MV practices.
Children belwo 12 years only will be recuited, as above 12 years the physiology conforms to adult practice.
