Research summary
Patients with bronchiectasis have more cardiovascular disease when compared to sex and aged matched individuals without bronchiectasis. This significantly impacts the breathing and functional capacity of patients with bronchiectasis. Conventional cardiovascular risk assessment tools underestimate the risk of cardiovascular diseases in this cohort of patient.
The aim of this study is to identify any difference in early cardiovascular risk markers in patients with bronchiectasis, by looking at arterial stiffness and endothelial dysfunction. These are measured using three non-invasive measurements: pulse wave velocity, iontophoresis with full-field laser perfusion imaging of the skin, and retinal imaging. This is a single visit study, where patients will also be asked to provide blood, sputum, and anthropometric measurements related to cardiovascular risk assessments. Results from this study may help to improve our cardiovascular risk assessments in patients with bronchiectasis.
