Research summary
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic disease that includes Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. Poor mother and infant outcomes are associated with those patients who experience IBD flare-up during pregnancy. Moreover, past research has found a link between IBD and psychological impairment and there are strong associations between psychological impairment during pregnancy and poor pregnancy outcomes. The aims of this study are to a) identify which aspects of psychological impairment (stress, anxiety or depression) are most strongly associated with disease activity and pregnancy outcomes; and b) investigate whether psychological impairment (stress, anxiety and depression) moderates the relationship between disease activity and adverse pregnancy outcomes. This project could also allow us to improve our understanding of the mechanisms underlying the effects of IBD and psychological impairment on pregnancy outcomes.
