Research summary
The study aims to identify and define inflammation levels found in adult patients with bronchiectasis and rheumatoid arthritis. Bronchiectasis is a chronic chest problem associated with repeated chest infections. Rheumatoid Arthritis is a long term condition where the immune system attacks the joints and occasionally the lungs. Both conditions have abnormal levels inflammation. We are interested in studying patients who have BOTH Bronchiectasis and Rheumatoid arthritis (Bronchiectasis Rheumatoid overlap syndrome- BROS) and comparing inflammation levels to those with one condition. We think that bronchiectasis leads to abnormal inflammation in the lung and this can trigger the development of abnormal immunity and later joint disease. It is not clear if this only happens in bronchiectasis or that this might happen in patients with COPD but without bronchiectasis\n \nUsing Quality of Life measures and lab analysis of blood and sputum samples, this study will hopefully identify some common characteristics which link Bronchiectasis and Rheumatoid Arthritis. This will be to see if there any inflammatory biomarkers, and any other defining characteristics, are present in other Respiratory Conditions or are unique to BROS. The study will involve giving samples on one occasion and will require only one visit. In general this can be linked to a routine clinic visit for those who are under review. Healthy volunteers can be identified and study visits arranged as suits them.\n\nWe will use control groups to compare against. Overall, there will be six patient groups in this study: Bronchiectasis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, COPD, Bronchiectasis/Rheumatoid Arthritis Overlap Syndrome (BROS), Bronchiectasis/COPD overlap syndrome (BCOS) and Healthy Volunteers.
