  • Data collection arrangements

Our database will contain brain MRI and electronic health record data from suspected stroke patients that presented at the Edinburgh (Lothian) Stroke Prevention Service.

These data have already been collected as part of ongoing stroke studies and/or are already stored in national NHS databases. NHS ISD/NSS will link the brain MRI data that we currently hold with the electronic health record data held by NHS.

We hope that we can use computer algorithms to automatically identify vascular brain damage features on MRI and better predict eventual outcomes (e.g., recurrent stroke, dementia, death) in suspected stroke patients. This may improve clinical care management and prognosis prediction.

  • Research programme

The database is part of a wider investigation into the consequences of vascular brain damage led by the Edinburgh Brain Research Imaging Centre. Related studies that may benefit from results of the database include the Edinburgh Stroke Study (LREC2001/4/46), Mild Stroke Study (LREC 2002/8/64), Mild Stroke Study 2 (LREC09/S1101/54), and Lothian Birth Cohort 1936 study (LREC/2003/2/29).
