Research summary
The aim of this study is to make an anatomical map of suitable vessels that can be used for breast reconstruction surgery using a patients own tissue ( Local perforator flap) along the inframammary fold (IMF, underneath the breast), the lateral chest wall (from the armpit down the side of the body) and following the bra-line onto the back.
The study will look at the position, size and blood flow of these blood vessels called perforators that lie underneath a woman's breast.
Local perforator based flaps are increasing used in partial and total breast reconstruction. Flaps based on perforators close to the breast periphery, and especially those in the bra line, leave scars that our studies show are very acceptable (>90%). These perforators are based on the thoracodorsal, lateral thoracic and intercostal vessels. Although several studies have reported on the surgical anatomy of these vessels, those originating along the bra-line are less well described.
This study is collecting data on the blood vessels only.REC name
