Research summary
We are looking into the factors which influence whether or not people partake in Bowel Cancer Screening.
Firstly we will send out a questionnaire to all people selected for Bowel Cancer Screening within 1 year at Tonge Fold Health Centre in Bolton. This is for ideas on what we could do to improve Bowel Cancer screening uptake.
Then in the same sample, in accordance with current literature, we will try and boost uptake by sending a GP endorsement letter and an information leaflet.
After 6 weeks the people who still have not contacted Bowel Cancer Screening will be called by their GP to see if this will improve uptake. If patients are still resistant to screening, they will be asked whether or not they would consent to discussing their reasons for non-respondence with their GP, to give further ideas on how to increase uptake. In addition, we will be looking to increase uptake by contacting 3 time non-responders at both Harwood Medical Centre and Halliwell Health Centre. GPs will be provided with a financial incentive to contact frequent non-responders to come in and discuss their reasons for not partaking in Bowel Cancer Screening.
The patients will be contacted initially by post and then by telephone. This will assess the efficacy of both phone and letter contact in increasing respondence.REC name
