Research summary
Born in Wales is a birth cohort study funded by the National Centre for Population Health and Wellbeing Research (NCPHWR). It aims to understand how current changes are impacting on health, wellbeing and family life during pregnancy and the first few years of life, and consequently on the future health, wellbeing and attainment of children growing up in Wales. The study has a particular focus on trying to recruit families with risk factors for poorer child health and attainment outcomes, and will explore factors including the impact of economic changes such as lockdown on maternal and paternal health and child outcomes. This information can help identify what can be done to support families from an early stage and inform funding, policies and interventions towards factors that are most important in determining children’s future outcomes. In order to recruit participants, we would be asking parents in Wales to fill out a short questionnaire when their child is between 18 months and 2 and a half years old. We are asking all participants if they complete the survey, to also consent to link their responses to routinely collected data on themselves and their child through the SAIL databank, a secure anonymised linkage database. This information is anonymised so that we cannot identify individual participants or their children but will be able to look at factors such as stress on a child’s readiness for school and future outcomes. The study is funded to recruit for 5 years. \n
