Research summary
The bone health of elite female and male distance runners in the United Kingdom is poorly understood. There is currently insufficient evidence to support recommendations for the routine use of biochemical markers and physiological assessment in sport science support services for monitoring and adjusting training and treatment advice to athletes at risk of poor bone health, stress fracture (SF) and the relative energy deficiency in sport (RED-S).
The current project will focus on characterising the physiological, metabolic, and hormonal parameters relating to bone health and the RED-S in elite endurance runners. Exploring the role of bone, hormonal, energy metabolism markers, will provide novel information regarding the co-regulation of bone and energy metabolism, which will have important implications for the relative energy deficiency (a new term coined by the International Olympic Committee) and medical management of distance runners in the United Kingdom.
